What is PHP?

PHP stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor and is a popular, multi-platform and open source server side scripting lanaguage that supports many databases (MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQK, etc.). PHP files can contain text, HTML tags and other scripts and are returned to the browser as plain HTML. PHP files have an ".php", ".php3", or ".phtml" file extension.

Basic PHP Syntax

A PHP scripting block always starts with "<?php" and ends with "?>" and can be placed anywhere inside a document. On servers with shorthand enabled you can start a scripting block with <? and end with ?> but, for maximum compatibility use the standard form (<?php).

<?php
?>

A PHP file normally contains HTML tags, just like an HTML file as well as some PHP scripting code. <html> <body> <?php echo "Hello World!"; ?> </body> </html>

Comments in PHP

In PHP, use // to comment out a single line or /* and */ to comment out a large block.

<html> <body> <?php //This is a comment /* This is a comment block */ ?> </body> </html>
